If spot and natural ventilation together aren’t enough for a home’s needs, the guide points toward a whole-house system instead — a setup with dedicated fans and ductwork that is exhaust-only, supply-only, or balanced between the two.
The same DOE guide is direct about one thing that applies to almost every bathroom fan question: kitchen and bathroom vents should lead directly outside and never vent into the attic, where trapped moisture can cause problems and raise potential health risks. - Look for recurring mold in the same spots. - Time how long it takes the mirror to clear. Run the fan during a shower and note how many minutes it takes for fogging to disappear afterward. A fan that never seems to clear the room, or takes noticeably longer than it used to, may be undersized, blocked, or losing power.
- Listen and feel at the vent cover. With the fan on, hold a tissue or a sheet of toilet paper near the grille. Little to no pull suggests a blocked duct, a failing motor, or a duct that has come loose above the ceiling — any of which is worth a professional look.
- Try to trace the duct’s exit point. From outside, look for a roof cap, wall cap, or soffit vent roughly above or near the bathroom. If you can’t find any exterior termination point, the duct may end in the attic rather than outdoors—the exact pattern the Department of Energy’s ventilation guide warns against.
- Note the room’s general humidity comfort. The EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, and ideally between 30 and 50 percent. You don’t need a meter to start: persistent stickiness, mirrors that stay fogged long after showers, or a musty smell are practical clues that humidity is running high.

- “Where does this duct terminate, and is that termination point sealed and functioning?”
- “Is the moisture pattern I’m seeing consistent with a fan or duct problem, or does it point to something else, like a roof or plumbing leak?”
- “Could this fan be undersized for the room, based on what I’m seeing with the mirror and airflow?”
- “Would a timer or humidity-sensing switch make sense here, given how this bathroom is used?”

- Any duct or roof/wall penetration work, since improper sealing can lead to leaks or moisture intrusion.
- Mold covering more than about 10 square feet, or mold following a significant water event — the EPA points toward professional-level guidance at that scale.
- Suspected mold inside the HVAC system itself, which the EPA advises addressing, and not running the system further, before taking action.
- If you rent: the EPA specifically recommends reporting plumbing leaks or persistent moisture problems to your landlord or building manager right away.
